Why I Love Photography

The whole reason I became fascinated with photography as a kid was it gave me the ability to freeze time; to capture that fraction of a second forever. Whether I was using my Polaroid one-step, a 110 or my SLR I felt I was beating time as long as I had these “frozen moments”. This concept has become more prevalent now that my children seem to grow at blinding speeds and my parents age.

If you’ve ever been around me for an extended period of time you know it’s not uncommon for me to start snapping candids of the people I’m with. This past labor day weekend we were celebrating at my Uncle (and Godfather)’s house. When I made the exposure below, no one knew that 24 hours later he would have an accident on his motorcycle. He is okay; I suppose as okay as you can be after dumping a heavy bike on a rural road. My Uncle luckily only suffered 5 broken ribs and a punctured lung. With those injuries, he still managed to pick up his Harley Davidson Ultra Classic (a big bike) and ride it home.

I sent a copy of the picture below with a note that said something along the lines of how I was thrilled that this was not the last photo I ever made of him.

I’m sure glad I stole the moment.

A Man and His Bass

I feel that a portrait is so much more than what the word conveys. To me, a portrait needs to capture a persons character, their core essence.

It doesn’t even have to contain a person’s face. Sometimes a persons hands can be an accurate and compelling portrait. They can tell the story without ever revealing their owner.

Meet Steve. Steve is a very talented jazz bass player (I know because I got to listen to him play during our session). I hope Steve’s portrait conveys the years he spent honing and mastering his craft as well as his warmth and depth.
